Essential fact of our cultural heritage, the Carnival was born in an enslaved society marked by intermixed cultures and ethnic groups. It represents a wonderful moment to live, enhanced by joy and free expression.
The Carnival of Martinique can be distinguished by specific themes and colours for every Shrove day : a mixture of organization, spontaneity, creativity and authenticity.

On your mark, ready, GO!! It's 3pm in the city. The music is vibrating as locals and foreigners gyrate all over the streets of Fort de France. The rythmic beat of steel, drums and bambou takes you back in time, way back on the history trail. Can you feel the beat?

CARNIVAL QUEEN COMPETITION  
Beauty Contest
Time when all eyes fixate the stage upholding local beauty. Talented and sassy young ladies ages 5-77 viaing for a title. The competition is held in three categories: princess for the little ladies, queen for the ladies and grand ma queen for the even younger ladies. Displaying charm, carisma,talent and beauty. Amazement and laughter awaits both the young and the old.

Late- night Parade
Dressed in their costumes, taking over the streets by night. Screams and laughter can be heard from all over, as the sound of music echos the air. A cultural taste with a blend of passion.

St.Pierre in the 19th century come alive at the market place in Fort de France. Costumes in the heart of tradition as the locals vehmently display their history through dance to all.

Community Parade By Night
Energetic dancers bring of the show as the band musicians play their steel, drums, ti-bois, corn shells and all other instruments that bring on that rythmic melody to turn the community alive. That sweet taste of carnival in the making.

Commercial and Administrative employees partake in the carnival spirit
Business and commercial structures come together to join in on the spirit. Since 2004, these structures light up the streets of the capital not in the aim of merchandising their products but to outline their part in the local tradition held annually on the island.

Children Parade
Children are the heart of carnival. From a tender age they become the sportlight of this tradition. School administrations organise together a programme under a theme. The children parade the streets of Fort de France in their colourful costumes having you wishing to be a kid again.

Culinary flavours
Pinapple, apple, banana etc. Whatever your flavour! The commercants take on the market place with a mouth-watering scent of spices, essence and fruits. A sizzling sound of hot fryers, preparing their local delices. A finger-licking treat that no one can resist.

JOU OUVE - STREET JAM IN  PYJAMAS

Parade
This is the cock crow wake up call. Dressed in lite to practically no clothing, revellers take on the streets with vibrant music to introduce the big event. Starting out at dawn, by the (Canal Levassor) Levassor Canal through the streets of Fort de France. This is the official parade of the events to follow.

WEDNESDAY 

CREMATING OF VAVAL

Parade

The end of the season.Vaval makes his final appearance. Early morning death announcement is made. Exhausted, yet devoted, revellers turn out in mass numbers to enjoy the final moments of the festivity. After all the excitement; the revellers gather by the sea side and await the final peak show of the evening. The mascot is placed on the sea and is cremated. Everyone watch  in amazement and say their goodbyes as the seasons officially closes.

Why ponder? 2010 is just arond the corner.
